About the 1993 vintage
1993 Vintage Port :
The 1993 was one of the worst years ever for weather in the Douro, with rain falling throughout the harvest. No declarations were made and little or no vintage Port was made.
1993 Italian :
Italian wines from the 1993 vintage fared better than their predecessors in 1992 - the weather was still unfavourable, however there were more acceptable wines produced. Barolos from this vintage offered a good experience, and should still be drinking now.
1993 Bordeaux :
The 1993 in Bordeaux is considered to be a moderate vintage, following on from the poor vintages of 1991 and 1992. Despite some dilution from late rains in September, the better examples of wine from this year exhibit a deep colour, rich intensity and good structure. The top wines from 1993 find more favour with critics than 1991 and 1992 and should still offer a good drinking experience now, making them a good 28 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary celebration.

***90 Points- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate*** Now under new ownership, Gruaud-Larose appears to have emerged from the mini-slump or stylistic indecisiveness of the late eighties. It has returned to the blockbuster, super-extracted, savagely intense, full-bodied, tannic winemaking style that characterized this property's performances for most of this century. What is impressive about Gruaud-Larose's 1993 is its superb richness and wild blackberry, cassis character that resembles a blockbuster Syrah from the Hermitage hillsides. Certainly the samples I tasted were massive, full-bodied wines that will no doubt become more civilized with cellaring.

The 1993 Chateau Yquem is a beautiful, slightly golden yellow, this wine is still very young to express much on the initial nose. After swirling, and even more so after a few minutes in the glass, there come scents of citrus, raisins and also more floral aromas with delicate lime flower. These are still early days and time is needed for these impressions to develop. In the mouth the great quality and potential are obvious. The attack is round, and the volume quickly fills the whole mouth. What sweetness and what pleasure - with just enough acidity. Flavours of mandarin, apricot, fruit paste, then the vanillary, lightly grilled notes associated with the long élevage in barrel. The roundness and amplitude continue, and there is great length and persistence of all these successive sensations.’

Valtellina is one of Italy’s most dramatic wine regions, located in Lombardy, the vineyards are located on steep mountains. The principal grape variety is Chiavennasca (the local name for Piedmont’s Nebbiolo and an Italian grape varietal that has been cultivated since medieval times here). The DOCG wines are generally comprised of at least 90% Chiavennasca and then blended with other quality local grapes like Brugnola, Rossola, Pignola. Then there is a DOC Valtellina Rosso (also called Rosso di Valtellina DOC) which requires at least 80% of the blend be Chiavennasca and does not have minimum ageing requirements.

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

"One of the most successful Medocs of the vintage, Cos d'Estournel's 1993 exhibits an opaque dark purple colour, and a heady, sweet, pure, blackcurrant bouquet that roars from the glass. With surprising richness, fat, and glycerin, tasters would never suspect that this medium-bodied, elegant yet authoritatively-flavoured wine emerged from such a difficult vintage. The wine's low acidity and roundness guarantees 12-14 years of drinkability. This is a splendid success in an irregular vintage. Cos d'Estournel is clearly producing wines that are often of first-growth potential." Rating 89/100

Chianti, situated in Tuscany in central Italy, is home to probably the best-known and most iconic of all Italian wines. The area’s most highly regarded wines come from the Chianti Classico zone which is the heartland of the Chianti wine region – its traditional and longest-established vinicultural area. This fame is due not just to the high quality of the wines, but also to the classico zone's iconic Tuscan landscape and wine making traditions. This Chianti is characterised by its red and black cherry character, intermingled with notes of wild herbs, mint and spice, supported by a racy acidity and mellow tannins.
