About the 1993 vintage
1993 Vintage Port :
The 1993 was one of the worst years ever for weather in the Douro, with rain falling throughout the harvest. No declarations were made and little or no vintage Port was made.
1993 Italian :
Italian wines from the 1993 vintage fared better than their predecessors in 1992 - the weather was still unfavourable, however there were more acceptable wines produced. Barolos from this vintage offered a good experience, and should still be drinking now.
1993 Bordeaux :
The 1993 in Bordeaux is considered to be a moderate vintage, following on from the poor vintages of 1991 and 1992. Despite some dilution from late rains in September, the better examples of wine from this year exhibit a deep colour, rich intensity and good structure. The top wines from 1993 find more favour with critics than 1991 and 1992 and should still offer a good drinking experience now, making them a good 28 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary celebration.

Grumello wines are those made under the Valtellina Superiore, specifically from grapes grown in the named Grumello sub-region. Grumello is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Inferno, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella.

Chianti, situated in Tuscany in central Italy, is home to probably the best-known and most iconic of all Italian wines. The area’s most highly regarded wines come from the Chianti Classico zone which is the heartland of the Chianti wine region – its traditional and longest-established vinicultural area. This fame is due not just to the high quality of the wines, but also to the classico zone's iconic Tuscan landscape and wine making traditions.

Now under new ownership, Gruaud-Larose appears to have emerged from the mini-slump or stylistic indecisiveness of the late eighties. It has returned to the blockbuster, super-extracted, savagely intense, full-bodied, tannic winemaking style that characterized this property's performances for most of this century. What is impressive about Gruaud-Larose's 1994 is its superb richness and wild blackberry, cassis character that resembles a blockbuster Syrah from the Hermitage hillsides. Certainly the samples I tasted were massive, full-bodied wines that will no doubt become more civilized with cellaring.

This wine is blended from one of Italy's classic red-grape varieties, Barbera, and the lesser-known Croatina. Croatina is known locally by the synonym Bonarda, a title it shares with two other Bonarda grape varieties from various spots in northern Italy and even one from Argentina. The two permitted varieties are split roughly 60:40 respectively in the blends to create a relatively soft, well-rounded red wine with cherry-like aromas.

Merlot can also produce a delightful and intriguing pure varietal wine. While Merlot has a long history of use as a blending wine, pure Merlot wines have been relatively slow in gaining momentum in Italy. That too has changed and today some of the world’s best Merlot wines bear Italian labels.

Troplong-Mondot has been on a head-long charge to higher and higher quality since 1988. Their 1993 is a black/purple-colored wine with gorgeous purity, ripeness, and extract, aligned to a wine with considerable elegance, finesse, and personality. It offers superb richness, medium body, layers of beautifully delineated black-cherry and cassis fruit, fine acidity, and ripe tannin. A stunning example of the vintage, Wine Advocate 90-92

A terrific wine for the vintage, Latour's 1993 reveals an opaque purple color, a backward, cedar, black walnut, cassis, and earth-scented nose, medium to full body, gorgeously rich, concentrated fruit, moderately high tannin (but no astringency), and a sweet, long, powerful finish. The wine does not possess any of the vegetal, green pepper characteristics of the vintage, nor any hint of hollowness or harshness. This wine may prove to merit an even higher rating. Is this vintage the modern day clone of the 1967 and 1971? ***Robert Parker's Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition Jan 1998***

The Valpolicella zone is bordered to the west by the Bardolino DOC, located along the banks of Lake Garda, which produces similar wines to basic Valpolicella using many of the same grapes.[10] The historical "heart" of Valpolicella winemaking is in the Monti Lessini hills located northwest of the town of Verona. In 1968, the boundaries of the region were extended far eastward towards the DOC production zone of Soave and south to the plains of the northern bank of the Po river and its tributary the Adige.
