About the 1993 vintage
1993 Vintage Port :
The 1993 was one of the worst years ever for weather in the Douro, with rain falling throughout the harvest. No declarations were made and little or no vintage Port was made.
1993 Italian :
Italian wines from the 1993 vintage fared better than their predecessors in 1992 - the weather was still unfavourable, however there were more acceptable wines produced. Barolos from this vintage offered a good experience, and should still be drinking now.
1993 Bordeaux :
The 1993 in Bordeaux is considered to be a moderate vintage, following on from the poor vintages of 1991 and 1992. Despite some dilution from late rains in September, the better examples of wine from this year exhibit a deep colour, rich intensity and good structure. The top wines from 1993 find more favour with critics than 1991 and 1992 and should still offer a good drinking experience now, making them a good 26 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary celebration.

***90 Points- Robert Parker's Wine Advocate*** Now under new ownership, Gruaud-Larose appears to have emerged from the mini-slump or stylistic indecisiveness of the late eighties. It has returned to the blockbuster, super-extracted, savagely intense, full-bodied, tannic winemaking style that characterized this property's performances for most of this century. What is impressive about Gruaud-Larose's 1993 is its superb richness and wild blackberry, cassis character that resembles a blockbuster Syrah from the Hermitage hillsides. Certainly the samples I tasted were massive, full-bodied wines that will no doubt become more civilized with cellaring.

"One of the most successful Medocs of the vintage, Cos d'Estournel's 1993 exhibits an opaque dark purple colour, and a heady, sweet, pure, blackcurrant bouquet that roars from the glass. With surprising richness, fat, and glycerin, tasters would never suspect that this medium-bodied, elegant yet authoritatively-flavoured wine emerged from such a difficult vintage. The wine's low acidity and roundness guarantees 12-14 years of drinkability. This is a splendid success in an irregular vintage. Cos d'Estournel is clearly producing wines that are often of first-growth potential." Rating 89/100

88 Points (Parker) Reviews: A lovely classic Bordeaux nose: autumn leaves, wood and dried fruits. Quite and acidic entry with a soft tannic core. A potentially great wine struggling against the vintage. A fine 1993 like La Dominique.Wine Journal Jan 2000 This estate has been extremely successful in recent vintages. One of the biggest, richest, most impressive wines of the vintage, Leoville-Barton's 1993 reveals a saturated black/purple color, dense, foresty, rich, blackcurrant, and chocolatey aromas and flavors, excellent ripeness and depth, good glycerin, and hard tannin in the finish. This is a backward, exceptionally well-endowed 1993 that needs another 5-7 years of cellaring. It should keep for 20 years. Robert parker 1997

92 Points - Robert Parker Less than 50% of Margaux's 1993 harvest made the grade for the estate's "grand vin." A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, and the 2% Cabernet Franc, Margaux's 1993 is atypically supple and seductive. It offers an impressively saturated ruby/purple color, an intense fragrance of red and black fruits, toast, and spring flowers, and a voluptuously-textured, multi-layered personality, with expansive, sweet, ripe fruit. It is surprisingly forward, without the mouth-aching tannin possessed by many 1993s. The wine is medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure, and reminiscent of this property's splendid 1985. Capable of lasting for 20-25 years, it should turn out to be one of the most seductive and popular 1993 clarets. Very impressive!" Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 1995

A terrific wine for the vintage, Latour's 1993 reveals an opaque purple color, a backward, cedar, black walnut, cassis, and earth-scented nose, medium to full body, gorgeously rich, concentrated fruit, moderately high tannin (but no astringency), and a sweet, long, powerful finish. The wine does not possess any of the vegetal, green pepper characteristics of the vintage, nor any hint of hollowness or harshness. This wine may prove to merit an even higher rating. Is this vintage the modern day clone of the 1967 and 1971? ***Robert Parker's Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition Jan 1998***

A beautiful, slightly golden yellow, this wine is still very young to express much on the initial nose. After swirling, and even more so after a few minutes in the glass, there come scents of citrus, raisins and also more floral aromas with delicate lime flower. These are still early days and time is needed for these impressions to develop. In the mouth the great quality and potential are obvious. The attack is round, and the volume quickly fills the whole mouth. What sweetness and what pleasure - with just enough acidity. Flavours of mandarin, apricot, fruit paste, then the vanillary, lightly grilled notes associated with the long élevage in barrel. The roundness and amplitude continue, and there is great length and persistence of all these successive sensations.’

*** 87 Points - Robert Parker *** Reviews: A saturated dark ruby/purple-colored, medium-bodied, well-made wine, Clerc-Milon's 1993 exhibits textbook, blackcurrant and weedy tobacco scents. Although the wine is slightly tannic, it does not reveal any of the vintage's astringency or vegetal characteristics. It should offer attractive, velvety-textured, surprisingly fine drinking. *** 90 Points - Robert Parker *** Reviews: " The 1993 is a beautifully made wine which could be considered a sleeper of the vintage. The wine boasts a dark purple color, followed by a sweet, pain grillee, roasted nut, and cassis-scented bouquet that is just beginning to open. In the mouth, the wine may not possess the body and volume of a vintage such as 1990 or 1989, but there is more richness of fruit, a sweet, ripe, pureness to the wine, as well as medium body and outstanding balance. This moderately tannic, well-focused, surprisingly rich 1993 is capable of 15-20 years of evolution. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015."Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 1997

The Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou is one of the Medoc's more successful wines, the 1993 has reached full maturity. It exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, and a moderately attractive nose of minerals and jammy cranberry fruit intermixed with black currants. In the mouth, this wine has lost its baby fat, revealing medium body, and an elegant, measured personality. Pure, with well-integrated tannin, this is a stylish, graceful Ducru-Beaucaillou."
